Creating A New Civilization
How Newt Gingrich has been Tofflerized
By Nancy Thomson
Some of us can be baffled before the political primaries, others bewildered during the primaries, and then most of us wind up addled and confused as our "conservative candidates" become liberal once they are in office.
This transition is very descriptive of what transpired during the metamorphosis of Newt Gingrich.
The faculty at the college in Georgia where Gingrich was employed were amazed to hear Newt described in campaign circles as a conservative. He had always been considered as a liberal by his colleagues.
On the personal level, Gingrich is fond of animals and is a frequent visitor to zoos. He also exhibits a cruel side. When his first wife was suffering from cancer, Gingrich made a trip to her hospital room and asked for a divorce. This obsession with himself and his career has dominated political decisions and alienated the conservatives he is supposed to lead.
A consummate fundraiser with novel ideas, Gingrich formed several foundations to finance his rise to power. He shored up his donations while running for office by instituting these non-profit PACS and foundations.
One example of such an organization was called the West Georgia College Foundation.
Started in 1990, this foundation was designed to motivate "at risk" schoolchildren within Gingrich’s congressional district. Given the title of "Earning While Learning", third grade students were given two dollars for every book they read.
Gingrich gave $34,250 seed money to this project. He took advantage of a provision in the Ethics Reform Act of 1989. This Act gave House members a large pay raise in lieu of accepting speaking fees from special interest groups.
However, this same Act allowed members to direct honorariums to their favorite charities. Newt requested that lobbyists send his speaking fees to the Earning While Learning program. As later noted, most of this money wasn’t spent on the children.
Another wrinkle in the money raising schemes took place when Gingrich arranged to make donations to the Foundation at West Georgia College tax-deductible. This was achieved by having the College adopt Newt’s reading program as a line item on its balance sheet.
Melvin Steely, a director of Earning While Learning, received nearly two-thirds of the project budget. In addition to his Foundation salary, Steely earned a salary as a full-time professor and part-time congressional aide in Gingrich’s district office.
In 1995, 86% of the money spent on the reading program went to Steely and two other West Georgia faculty members.
During a nationalized television college course, Newt waxed eloquent about his reading project. He told the audience that the overhead cost was offset because everything was totally volunteer, the money all goes to the kids.
Another fund raising endeavor, was labeled the "Progress and Freedom Foundation" (PFF) which extracted money from communications CEOs. The Foundation used 84% of its funds to promote Newt.
Some of the perks provided the CEOs gave them access to the Speaker in return for tax-deductible donations. Shades of the Clinton fund raisers!
"They were selling Newt, and they were heavy -handed about it" recalled a Bell telephone executive. The massive telecommunications bill, signed by Clinton, involved a mix of special interests. It is not clear what role the PFF played in this legislation but the Bell communications were helped by this bill.
Representative David Drier from San Dimas (CA), became a member of the Gingrich kitchen cabinet. Like his boss, Drier is portrayed as a staunch conservative, which is as misleading a title for him as it is for Gingrich.
Drier is pushing for expansion of NAFTA and exhibits all of the globalist characteristics of the Speaker.
Described as a hot property and rising star for the GOP, Newt has appointed Drier to important committees.
Talk show host, Mike Reagan who calls Drier "my good friend," has used the congressman as a substitute on his program. The last time Drier subbed for Reagan, the call-ins were hostile to his liberal views, and support of NAFTA. He became rather testy and short with callers who kept referring to the trade agreement. He has not been asked back since.
GOPAC, dubbed "Newt’s World" is a network of interlocking Gingrich affiliated groups. Gingrich defected from his Republican Party’s position to ally himself with a major GOPAC donor, Roger Milliken, on the issues of import quotas. There have been so many instances of Newt’s siding with the Clinton Administration that no longer do we have opposing parties. As Newt announced, I can work with Clinton. Who then represents the Republican viewpoint.
Another unexplained swerve to the left occurred when Gingrich began courting liberal Jesse Jackson. This outraged conservative blacks and conservatives in general. Jesse was invited to sit with Newt’s wife at the State of the Union address. Gingrich appeared as the lone guest on Jackson’s television show. Since this program usually features two people debating "liberal and conservative" discussion topics Newt’s solo appearance signaled a philosophical agreement. What a coup for a liberal democrat!
Conservative dissatisfaction with Newt’s accommodation to the left wing Democrat agenda resulted in an attempted coup in November, 1996. Gingrich began buttonholing Republican House members, making promises to colleagues and squelched the rebellion with Prussian efficiency.
Although Gingrich won his second term as Speaker, a top House aide stated, "Two years ago Newt came in on top of the world." His ascension this time is a bit more humbled." The second term as Speaker began on a very different note than the first.
Despite all of the above, the most telling features (and perhaps the reason) for Newt’s duplicity is a result of his long association with Alvin and Heidi Toffler.
The Tofflers, who have been described as "Newt’s Guru", are global, new age socialists. Gobbledegook best explains phrases such as "demassification of production", "civilizational upheavel", "byte cities", " brain lords" and "cyberpolitics." Their literary efforts are arrogant and reach illogical conclusions based solely on left wing ideology which (when tried) has already proved fatal for our society.
Founders of the "three wave" theories, wave one - agricultural, wave two - industrial, and wave three - knowledge power, the Tofflers want to redesign the world.
No longer are sovereignty, the U.S. Constitution or traditional families necessary. Tofflers, Alvin and Heidi, scoff at the problems associated with Clinton’s foreign campaign contributions. It is no big deal, according to them, because every country should be interfering with every other country on a global basis. EVERYTHING is global!
They reason that those who consider foreign linked funding as being inappropriate are basing their decisions on the obsolete conception of nationhood.
The Toffler’s book, "Creating A New Civilization" (The Politics Of The Third Wave) with a foreword by Newt Gingrich, should have been warning enough for the Republicans.
Newt has joined the Clintinistas. He has rammed through the 22,000 page GATT, put U.S. business under the WTO, pushed the Mexican peso bailout using $20,000,000,000 (that’s billion) of our tax money, supported Clinton’s effort to block repatriation of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans who fled to the U.S. for temporary refuge when their region was in turmoil, and is responsible for initiating the latest effort to admit Puerto Rica as a state.
This is a partial list of third wave thinking on the part of Newt Gingrich.
Heidi Toffler stated that more women and minorities must be elected to government. In response, Arianna Huffington exclaimed that such a concept was second wave and out of synch with new age women who won’t have to depend on Washington to make their marks. The former Mrs. Huffington also urged third wavers not to associate with those who cling to the second wave.
The Republicans (the opposition party) had better decide which wave the Speaker is putting them in. Our Constitutional boat is sinking fast and the Gingrich-Toffler third wave power drive will drown us all.
